TOEFL Speaking – Topic 2: Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning
Interviewer: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. I’m conducting a study about people’s experiences with education. I’d like to ask you a few questions. [2-second pause] First, do you prefer online learning or traditional classroom learning? Why?
Interviewer: Many students say online learning offers more flexibility, while others believe traditional classrooms provide better interaction. What do you think are the main advantages of your preferred learning style?
Interviewer: Some people argue that online learning makes students less socially connected, while others think it helps students become more independent and self-disciplined. What is your opinion about this issue? Why?
Interviewer: Finally, in your opinion, do you think online learning will completely replace traditional classroom learning in the future? Why or why not?
🎤 Question 1 – Preference
Personally, I prefer traditional classroom learning because it fits my learning style better. Generally, I feel more focused and motivated in a structured environment. When I attend in-person classes regularly, I notice steady improvement in my understanding and confidence. It not only allows direct interaction with teachers but also encourages meaningful discussions with classmates. Of course, commuting can sometimes be tiring, especially on busy days, but gradually I adapt to the routine. For example, when I participated in classroom debates, I felt more engaged and confident expressing my ideas. So overall, I believe traditional learning has a stronger impact on my academic development.
🎤 Question 2 – Advantages of Your Preferred Style
I believe traditional classroom learning offers several important advantages. First, it generally provides better face-to-face interaction, which helps students understand complex topics more clearly. When students ask questions directly, they often receive immediate feedback. Second, classroom environments gradually build communication and teamwork skills through group activities. However, online learning does offer flexibility, especially for students with busy schedules. Even so, I think direct human interaction plays a more important role in long-term success. For example, when I worked on group projects in class, I improved both my confidence and collaboration skills. So overall, traditional learning provides stronger academic and social benefits.
🎤 Question 3 – Social Connection vs Independence
In my opinion, online learning can help students become more independent, but it may reduce social interaction. When students study online regularly, they gradually develop self-discipline and time management skills. However, they may not have as many opportunities to communicate with peers. Even so, I believe independence is an important skill in today’s world. For example, when I completed an online course, I learned how to manage my schedule effectively. At the same time, I realized that I missed classroom discussions. So overall, while online learning builds independence, traditional classrooms are better for social connection.
🎤 Question 4 – Future Replacement
I do not believe online learning will completely replace traditional classroom learning. Although technology is developing rapidly, in-person interaction remains essential for effective education. When students communicate directly with teachers, they usually feel more engaged and supported. In addition, classroom settings gradually strengthen social and teamwork skills. Of course, online learning will continue to grow, especially because it is convenient and accessible. However, I think both systems will exist together in the future. For example, many schools already use a blended approach. So overall, traditional learning will likely remain an important part of education.
